THE LAWS OF THE KINGDOM Lecture 8.
THE LAW OF RETALIATION.
Matt. 5:38-42.
Jesus Introduces a Higher Law "The Law of Non Retaliation"
INTRODUCTION.
"NEVER STRIKE BACK"
1. Turn the other cheek
2. Let him take your coat
3. Go the second mile
4. Give to the one who asks
Lend to the would be borrower.
This is saying Christian Principles should be:
1. Do not retaliate. v. 39 - Rom. 12:14.
2. Do more than required. v. 40-41.
3. Be kind and generous. v. 42.
I. THE LAW OF RETALIATION.
This had been laid down in the Old Testament no fewer than
three times - Exodus 21-25 ; Lev, 24:19,20 ; Deut. 19:21.
This has often been quoted as the most savage, blood-thirsty
and merciless law of the Old Testament. But:-
1. The Law of "Tit for Tat." So far from being a savage and
blood-thirsty law, is in fact the beginning of mercy. It
limited vengeance. We see some tribes vendetta of
vengeance was annihilation. This law deliberately limits
vengeance. Limited to the one who committed the injury
to be punished, and the punishment was to be no more than
the equivalent of the injury to the inflicted. It is a
law of mercy not savagery.
2. This law never gave the individual the right of personal
vendetta. But it was a law for a judge in a law court to
assess punishment and penalty. Exodus 21.
We see interestingly enough this coming out in our own
law courts. Because the Jewish Jurists argued rightly
that to carry it out literally might in fact be the
reverse of justice, because it might involve the
displacement of a good eye, tooth, limb. And so the
injury done was assessed at a money value.
Questions for you to answer.
A. If we have a quarrel with someone, what 2 things are we
to do? (see Col. 3:13)
a..........................................................
b..........................................................
B. Write out 1 Peter 3:9, and find out what our response is
to be when others wrong us:.................................
............................................................
............................................................
C. What kind of attitude are we to have toward our enemies.
Write out Proverbs 25:21,22 and underline the instructions:
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
3. The injured person came to be looked upon as a slave, to
be sold in a market place. His value before and after the
injury was assessed, and the person responsible for the
injury had to pay the difference. Pain, healing, loss of
working time, medical expenses all were assessed. So really
it is strangely modern.
Jesus however obliterates the very principle of that law,
because retaliation, however controlled and restricted, has
no place in the Christian life.
II. GOD DEMANDS WE BE FLEXIBLE.
A. A dead branch will snap when bent, it is not flexible.
B. Phil. 4:11-13:
Paul says, "I have learned . . . I know both how to be
abused and how to abound . . . I can do all things
through Christ which strengtheneth me."
C. I know how to have money and how to be broke.
SURF AND TURF = FISH AND CHIPS when I'm poor,
" " " = LOBSTER AND STEAK when I'm rich.
1. LEARN TO BE FLEXIBLE.
"Doth the Potter over the clay?" Rom. 9:21.
By allowing certain situations to come, God teaches us to
be flexible.
2. FORGET ABOUT RESENTMENT AND RETALIATION.
ie:- The evil person that injures you, don't bear a grudge,
nor avenge your self.
Don't justify yourself let God do it. Our part is to love,
love ,love. Do them good and let God deal with them. We are
to resist evil in our actions, words, or thoughts.
Now this is not possible for the Natural man. But it is
possible for the child of the kingdom of God.
Christ when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he
suffered he threatened not; but committed himself to Him
that Judgeth righteously.
III. EXAMPLES FOR OUR FOLLOWING.
1. FIRST SITUATION.
Someone strikes you on the cheek.
SOLUTION.
Turn the other cheek.
This true story from the mission field shows the effect of
such unnatural reaction. Two heathen Chinese young men
found a New Testament and began reading it on their own.
In Matthew they found the above situation and solution.
The next time they went to one of the mission home meetings,
they went up to the missionary and asked, "Sir, are you a
Christian?" Upon being assured that he was, one of the
youths slapped him on the right cheek. Then they both stood
aside-waiting to see what would happen.
Somehow the Lord gave grace, to meet the situation and the
missionary calmly turned the other cheek toward the
offenders. The two began excitedly talking to each other in
Chinese and we can imagine the conversation went something
like this, "Say, he must be the real thing!" (Which makes
me wonder if it had happened to YOU, would YOU have passed
the test?)
REASON FOR STRIKING.
Now, why would the Lord ever let someone strike you on the
cheek? The Lord sees resentment, rebellion, independence
inside and knows how to get these reactions to manifest
themselves.
2. SECOND SITUATION.
If someone sues you for your coat:-
SOLUTION. Give him your cloak also.
The tunic (chiton) was the long sack-like inner garment,
made of cotton, or of linen. Now even the poorest man
would have a change of tunics. The cloak was the great
blanket-like garment which a man wore as a robe during the
day and used as a blanket at night - of such the Jew would
only have one. The Jewish law laid down that a man's
tunic might be taken as a pledge but not his cloak.
Exodus 22:26,27. "If thou at all take thy neighbour's
raiment to pledge (his cloak), thou shalt deliver it unto
him by that the sun goeth down, for that is his covering
only, it is his raiment for his skin; wherein shall he
sleep." By right a man's cloak could not be taken
permanently from him. The Christian thinks not of his
rights, but of his duties not of his privileges, but of
his responsibilities. The Christian is the man who has
forgotten that he has any rights at all.
"It will not cost thee so much to buy another cloak, as it
will cost thee by course of law to recover that; and
therefore unless thou can't get it again by fair means, it
is better to let him take it."
1. Yield each right to Jesus.
2. Expect God to test His rights.
EX:- Abraham Offering Isaac.
TEST. WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO SITUATION?
3. THIRD SITUATION.
If someone compels you to go a mile.
SOLUTION; Go with him two miles.
Palestine was under Roman rule and a Roman soldier could
rightfully compel a Jew to carry his pack for one mile. The
soldiers were self-contained units and the pack carried was
heavy. We can well imagine the burning resentment with
which a Jew stooped and shouldered that pack. The whole
mile was probably spent grumbling and cursing; and when it
is completed, the pack would be thrown on the ground with
more cursing. This would elicit a laugh from the soldiers,
for they delighted in the compulsory servitude.
Can you picture the surprise of one of the Roman soldiers
if at the end of one mile the Jew came up with, "Do you mind
if I carry this another mile? I haven't obtained the
victory over this yet."
4. FORTH SITUATION.
If someone persists in asking favours from you and borrowing
from you.
SOLUTION: Lend.
Borrow the car? Everybody and his brother asks, you need to
keep giving until you are free from resentment.
Every day your neighbour asks borrow cup of sugar? By the
third day. You Feel like saying, "Don't you ever go to
the store?"
CONCLUSION.
Jesus was laying down three great rules in vivid pictures:
1. The Christian will never seek retaliation for any insult,
however calculated and however deadly.
2. The Christian will never stand upon his legal rights or
on any other rights he may or may not posses.
3. The Christian will never think of his right as he likes,
but always of his duty to help.
.
FINALLY.
Psl.119:165. "Great peace have they that love thy laws and
